Experience
Database Applications has experience with the following products/frameworks/programming languages:
- MS Access
- MS SQL Server
- MySQL
- PostgreSQL
- Java
- Groovy
- Ruby
- EJB3
- Seam
- Ruby on Rails
- Grails
- JBoss
- Apache Tomcat
- Linux
At present we prefer Groovy and Grails running on Tomcat on a Linux server. The advantages of accessing a database using a browser are as follows:
- No software needs to be installed on the client computers, except an operating system (any operating system, in most cases) and a browser
- Any number of client machines can connect to the server and not incur licence fees
- If any changes are made to the application, that happens on the server. Client machines do not need to change
Access front-ends on client machines mandate MS Office Professional on every machine. The OEM version costs about AU$400 and the boxed version about double that. A database accessed by several users at the same time should really be running on a server operating system. Several Linux server operating systems, like Centos, are free. The MS Server operating systems all cost big money. Going beyond Access to MS SQL Server is also costly. MySQL and PostgreSQL are both available for free. Very nearly 90% of the top 500 super computers in the world run Linux.
